Just change to the firmware directory and run nix-shell, this will start a new Bash shell with a PATH that contains the flash utility and the toolchain. This is handy because the packages in the shell are not “installed”, there are fetched or built, but can be garbage collected later. https://nixos.org/nix/manual/#sec-nix-shell
